Problem

The primary challenge in upgrading a Laravel application from the current outdated version to the latest version lies in the significant changes and improvements made over multiple major releases. Each version increment potentially introduces breaking changes, deprecated functions, and new features that can affect the existing application codebase. Another challenge is that the application itself is very popular and used and every change should be verified and tested deeply before rolling out.

Solution

The key to a successful upgrading process is to do increment upgrades, version by version while following best practices and applying all changes defined by the Laravel upgrade guide. During the upgrade, we could face package incompatibility so we need to find an alternative package. Also, there could be a need for code refactoring.

Keep me up-to-date

Keeping a complex application up-to-date, especially when using a framework like Laravel, is crucial for several reasons:

1. Security
Vulnerability Fixes: New updates often include patches for security vulnerabilities. Failing to update can leave your application exposed to security breaches. Improved Security Features: Modern versions of frameworks like Laravel often come with enhanced security features that are not available in older versions.
2. Performance Improvements
Efficiency: Updates can significantly improve the efficiency of the framework, leading to faster application performance.
Resource Utilization: Newer versions often optimize the use of system resources, reducing the load on servers.
3. Access to Latest Features
New Functionalities: Each update might bring new features or enhancements that can be leveraged to improve your application.
Modern Technologies: Staying updated allows you to utilize the latest technologies and integrate modern tools more easily.
4. Compatibility
With Other Software: Updates ensure compatibility with the latest versions of other software, tools, and libraries.
Cross-Version Compatibility: In the case of major updates, maintaining currency can simplify future upgrades.
5. Community Support and Resources
Active Support: Popular frameworks like Laravel have large communities. Staying current ensures better community support and access to the latest resources.
Up-to-Date Documentation: The most recent documentation and learning resources will be aligned with the latest version of the framework.
6. Code Quality and Maintainability
Refactoring and Optimization: Updates often include refactored and optimized code, which can improve the overall code quality of your application.
Deprecated Features: Updates remove or replace deprecated features, encouraging the use of the latest practices and reducing technical debt.
7. Scalability
Better Scalability Options: Newer versions of frameworks are often designed with scalability in mind, offering better options for handling increased loads and growing user bases.
8. Legal and Compliance Issue
Regulatory Compliance: Staying updated can be crucial for compliance with legal and regulatory standards, especially in industries with stringent data protection laws.
9. Reputation and Reliability
Trust from Users: Users and clients often trust more in applications that are regularly updated, as it shows commitment to quality and security.
Professional Image: Regular updates reflect a professional and proactive approach in managing the application.
“ In summary, regularly updating your Laravel application ensures it remains secure, efficient, and compatible with modern technologies, while also enhancing maintainability, performance, and user trust.. “

Testing and Validation

After each version upgrade testing and validation of all changes are crucial. Flow consisted of the next steps:

  • Changes are done on our end
  • CI/CD pipeline builds application and checks if everything is fine with codebase running tests, installing packages, initialing db…
  • Once changes are verified with CI/CD we will open a pull request
  • During the pull request there could be slight changes to a codebase
  • Once the pull request is approved QA team will take a job
  • Once the QA team tests the changes and approves them we can move forward with the next major version
That's not the end

Once updated, the Laravel application should be regularly maintained, besides ongoing features and roadmap.
